West Island Women’s Shelter
The West Island Women’s Shelter is a nonprofit organization. Until the 1970s, the vast majority of women in Quebec suffered in silence from the violence and abuse inflicted by their partners. The combined influence of religion, family, gender stereotypes, and social conditioning kept many women trapped in these situations.
The psychological, physical, and emotional pain caused irreversible harm. In the mid-1970s, citizens and women’s groups decided to break the silence and publicly denounced domestic violence as a social issue, declaring that it should no longer be considered a private matter.
By the late 1970s, West Island residents mobilized to support victims of domestic violence, leading to the rental of a garage with the goal of saving lives. This is how our shelter was born.
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Coordinator – External and Clinical Services oversees external intervention services and school awareness programs, ensuring quality and compliance with established standards. They develop all external initiatives (individual and group interventions) and foster partnerships to promote prevention and awareness of domestic and post-separation violence.
The coordinator ensures the team adheres to the organization’s approach, values, principles, confidentiality protocols, intellectual property rights, and ethical code. They also contribute to the development and enhancement of external services in collaboration with the Executive Director.
