Rooted in the collective heart of the community since 1869, the Montreal SPCA is the oldest animal welfare organization in Canada and remains today a key player in promoting and protecting animal well-being.

Its mission is to protect animals from neglect, abuse, and exploitation, while educating the public and fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. The organization’s work spans a wide range of initiatives: shelter and adoption services, veterinary care, law enforcement and investigations, community programs, and public awareness campaigns.

The role

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for fostering and maintaining an innovative, collaborative, and dynamic work environment. This role involves close collaboration with the management team, board members, various committees, the public, donors, media, and government representatives.

The Executive Director actively contributes to setting departmental objectives in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan, as well as ensuring effective progress monitoring and results delivery.

The right fit
  • University degree in administration, management, or a related field;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a nonprofit organization and/or in a leadership role involving multiple stakeholders;
  • Proven team management experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders (e.g., volunteers, private partners, government agencies, etc.);
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and resource development;
  • Experience in fund development (philanthropy, fundraising, donor relations, grants, etc.);
  • Experience in governance and working with a board of directors (reports, dashboards, follow-ups, etc.);
  • Strong public relations skills (public speaking, media relations, government relations);
  • Understanding of animal ethics, welfare, and protection — a strong asset;
  • Experience working in a unionized environment — an asset.
