The role

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Research and Innovation will be responsible for developing, deploying, and promoting the strategy, as well as overseeing research, innovation, valorization, and entrepreneurship activities at Polytechnique Montréal. The mandate is to position the university as a reference in sustainable progress and to strengthen its leadership in high-impact fields of engineering and applied sciences.

As a key partner of the executive team, the Director will lead, together with their teams, all support and coordination activities in fundamental and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the exploitation of discoveries stemming from these activities, with the goal of establishing sustainable partnerships with academic, government, and industrial communities.

In addition, the Director’s actions will focus on expanding research activities to support graduate student training, achieving technological breakthroughs and scientific discoveries, and establishing partnerships. The Director will also be responsible for managing Polytechnique’s relationships with its government, institutional, and industrial partners worldwide in matters of research and innovation.

The following units report to this position:

  • The Associate Directorate of Innovation and Impact, including the Research and Technology Development Office (BRCDT), the Office of Technology Transfer, entrepreneurship support, and institutes and centers such as IMC2 (Multidisciplinary Institute for Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience), IET (Trottier Energy Institute), the Lassonde Institute for Breakthrough Innovations, and CITP (Clean Technologies Innovation Center)

  • The Office of Partnerships and Research Infrastructure

  • The Office of Research Ethics and Integrity

In carrying out these responsibilities, the Director will demonstrate strong knowledge of the national and international science and engineering ecosystem, strategic leadership, and a thorough understanding of the support needed by faculty, teams, research groups, and the graduate research student community.

The ideal candidate is able to develop a collaborative and inclusive vision, show dynamism and an innovative mindset, demonstrate strong analytical and synthesis skills, and excel at communication, persuasion, and mobilization.

The right fit
  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree, combined with relevant experience, in a related discipline

  • At least 10 years of experience in progressively senior management roles within an academic, research, or technology development environment related to engineering

  • Solid research experience with in-depth knowledge of current trends and challenges in fields particularly related to engineering and sciences

  • Excellent knowledge of the national and international ecosystems of education, engineering, and scientific research

  • A proven track record of securing significant funding to support major research or innovation projects
